Easy networking with Windows, Linux, Mac (SMB3?) Ext3/4 is fine, prefer not ZFS (won't be using snapshots, I'm backing up and archiving to LTO so not worried about bitrot) cheap SFP+ dual port, aggregated), 40Gb, or IPoIB 1 x Areca 1680IX 16-port SAS Raid adapter with 2GB RAM
15 x Hitachi 4TB 7200RPM enterprise drives Parts I have on hand (may or may not be helpful) I already have 15 x Hitachi 4TB enterprise drives (same model) that I can use. I've looked at the Synology DS1817+ with 10GbE that can do >1GB/s read and ~550MB/s write, but I'd rather have a server of my own build. I do archive to tape, so I don't need all my files online at the same time, but having a good 30-40TB is about the right amount of working space.
Most of my raw footage has a data rate of 225 to 300MB/s, so I need fast storage and capacity as the files are huge (1-2 TB for a small project, 5-10 TB for bigger projects). I'm trying to consolidate so that I can have a very fast NAS that I can use to edit from (or at least quickly pull video files if latency is too high) and share among devices. Currently I have a mishmash of >20TB of NVMe, SSD, and external RAID. I do most of my work on Windows, but also have a couple of Macs for using as a DIT station in the field and one that has an LTO 5 drive for LTFS backups. I'm looking for clever ideas on how to build a cost-effective NAS for video editing and visual effects.
